What is Marble and Where Does it Come From?
The word ‘marble’ comes from the Ancient Greek word ‘marmaros,’ which literally means ‘shining stone.’ It’s a material that has defined interior luxury for over 4,500 years. From the Egyptians using it inside the pyramids, through the Renaissance, and to modern interiors which still covet the natural beauty of marble.
Carrara marble is world-renowned, and is sourced from northern Tuscany, Italy. This ‘white gold’ has been used for iconic structures like the Pantheon and modern masterpieces like the Barcelona Pavilion that was designed in 1929.

Carrara marble was formed around 190 million years ago when calcium-rich marine sediments were subjected to extreme heat and pressure during the formation of the Apennine Mountains. This process transformed limestone into the pure yet durable marble that’s so highly desired today.
The marble is mined from quarries using fast-moving diamond-studded steel wires and chain saws to slice massive blocks directly from the mountain faces. The blocks are then transported to individual workshops to be cut, shaped and smoothed into final products. In our case, the stunning White Carrara Marble Table Tops.

Is Marble on Trend for 2026?
Absolutely! As we’ve discussed, genuine marble is timeless and will never go out of fashion, but its popularity is peaking in 2026 as it fits into several key commercial interior trends for the coming year.
Industrial Luxe
Carrara marble provides a sophisticated, high-end counterpoint to raw materials like exposed brick, concrete and blackened steel, softening the industrial aesthetic with polished, natural refinement.
Biophilic Beauty
As a raw, metamorphic stone, marble serves as a direct connection to nature, introducing organic patterns, natural textures, and rounded edges that create a sense of well-being indoors.
Quiet Luxury
Carrara marble embodies ‘quiet luxury’ through its absence of loud logos or artificial patterns, relying instead on its weight, cool touch, and heritage to signal quality and exclusivity.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Marble in a Hospitality Environment?
As a natural material, Carrara marble with its high tensile strength, is strong and durable, but it also needs regular care and maintenance to keep it looking its best. Using genuine marble in your venue has huge advantages, but there are a few key points you need to keep in mind:
The Pros of Genuine Marble Table Tops
Bespoke Beauty: Every slab is unique; no two tables in your venue will ever be identical.
Tactile Quality: The weight and cool temperature of marble provide a premium feel for guests.
Heat Resistance: Marble naturally stands up to heat without warping or melting.
Sustainability: A 100% natural, long-lasting material that can be recycled.
Photogenic: Provides a high-contrast, luminous background for guests’ social media posts.

The Operational Reality of Genuine Marble Table Tops
Porosity: Being a natural stone, marble is prone to staining from acidic liquids.
Maintenance: Requires regular cleaning with pH-neutral cleaners and periodical re-sealing.
Weight: Marble is heavy; it’s not ideal for venues that frequently rearrange their floor plan.
Cost: A higher initial investment compared to man-made composites or laminates.
Patina: Over years of heavy use, it will develop a worn look, which many actually see as a positive.
How to Care for Genuine Marble
Our White Carrara Marble Table Tops have a matte finish with a low sheen, meaning light scratches and etch marks blend in. They are also pre-treated with a professional-grade sealant, offering protection for commercial use. However, to easily address some of the ‘cons’ of choosing genuine marble table tops, you just need to be aware of how to look after your investment:
- Wipe up spills immediately (especially red wine or citrus) and always use coasters and placemats as protection.
- Reseal your marble table top every 6-12 months to prevent stains and prolong its life.
- DO NOT use acidic or multi-purpose cleaners as they will react with the calcium carbonate in the marble and cause ‘etching’.
- DO NOT use any hard brushes, scouring pads, or other abrasive materials as they can scratch the marble

FAQs
1. Where does hospitality-grade Carrara Marble come from?
Carrara Marble is sourced from mountainous regions in Italy. This area produces the highly sought-after white and grey stone formed from limestone that has been subjected to intense heat and pressure over millions of years. This metamorphic process creates the dense, crystalline structure that allows the stone to be polished and cut into precise shapes, making it as durable as it is beautiful.
2. How do you prevent "etching" on marble tables in a busy restaurant or bar?
Etching is the dull spots caused by acidic substances like lemon juice or vinegar and is the biggest concern for marble. The best defence is to ensure the marble is treated with a high-grade penetrating sealer during the fabrication process. And second, opt for a matte finish rather than a polished one. Matte surfaces are much more forgiving, as they don't show the contrast between the shiny surface and a dull etch mark as clearly as a polished stone would.
3. Is marble an eco-friendly choice for sustainable interior design?
Yes, marble is a 100% natural material that requires no synthetic chemicals or plastics to create. Because it is incredibly long-lasting, it has a much lower ‘replacement footprint’ than cheaper laminates or composites that end up in landfills every few years. Additionally, at the end of its life, marble is fully recyclable and can be crushed for use in construction or repurposed into terrazzo surfaces.
